Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells of porcelain or composite resin that are permanently adhered to the front surfaces of your teeth. They are used to improve the appearance of crooked teeth, stains, chips, or cracks. While veneers are a great option for many people, there are some factors that can make a person ineligible to get veneers.

Here is what makes someone a good candidate for dental veneers:

1.  You do not grind or clench your teeth.

Those who grind or clench their teeth (also known as bruxism) should not get veneers, as this habit will damage the porcelain. Chewing ice, your nails, or using your teeth to open packaging will also damage dental veneers.

2.  Your teeth have multiple cosmetic flaws.

You can get braces, whitening treatments, and dental bonding to straighten, whiten, and fix chips in your teeth, or you can have just one procedure with veneers. Veneers can also improve the appearance of gapped teeth, teeth that are too short, or teeth that are oddly shaped.

3.  You have ample tooth enamel.

People who have more than enough tooth enamel are great candidates for veneers. To get veneers, your dentist must remove some of your enamel so the veneers can bond properly to the teeth. If you have insufficient enamel, veneers may not be for you.

4.  You have mildly crooked teeth.

Those who have slightly crooked teeth are great candidates for veneers. Significantly crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, however, will put too much pressure on the teeth and veneers may crack. If you have a more serious problem like a misaligned bite, you may want to consider braces.
