How Often Should a Teenager Go to the Dentist?

Teens are going through a lot. Their brains and bodies are developing, and they are trying to figure out who they are in this world. It’s common for them to neglect their dental health. This is why it’s extra important for teenagers to visit their dentist regularly, at least every six months.

Patients of all ages should see a dentist biannually, but teens may need to go to the dentist more frequently for things like:

  • Braces. A teen with braces will need to visit their dentist or orthodontist about once a month to have their braces adjusted. They also might need more frequent dental cleanings as it can be difficult to thoroughly brush with braces.

  • Wisdom Teeth. The teen years are a common phase for wisdom teeth to begin showing. Your teen may need to go to the dentist to have their wisdom teeth evaluated to see if they need to be removed.

  • Recreational Injuries. Many teens participate in sports or activities that can result in injuries to their teeth and mouth. If your teen experiences a dental injury, first check if your family dentist can see them for an emergency visit. If they are unavailable, you can call an emergency dentist.

  • Eating Disorders. Teenagers are at a high risk of developing eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia can cause a lot of damage to the mouth and tooth enamel. Dentists are often one of the first people to recognize the signs of an eating disorder in their patients, as eating disorders commonly affect dental health. If your teen has an eating disorder, they may need more frequent dentist visits.

Every teenager is unique, so consider these factors and decide for yourself how often your teen needs to see the dentist. Call My Ogden Dentist to schedule an appointment!
