What Are My Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth?
Teeth are a vital part of the human body. If you’re part of the 50% of Americans who are missing at least one tooth, you have several options for replacing your missing tooth.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the most permanent and longest-lasting option. They are also the most expensive. They are made of a surgically placed titanium post, an abutment, and a crown. They look, feel, and function like real teeth and can last many years, sometimes decades.
Fixed Bridge
In a fixed bridge, the replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to two crowns on each side, which are placed on the neighboring healthy teeth. This requires removing the enamel from the neighboring teeth to make room for the crowns.
Resin-retained Bridge
A resin-retained bridge involves a pontic held in place by porcelain or metal framework that is bonded to the back of the adjacent healthy teeth. This does not require any enamel removal and is not visible on the front side of your teeth. These are best suited for front teeth, not for molars.
Removable Partial Denture
A removable partial denture is a wire framework with a few replacement teeth bonded to it. This is the least expensive option, has a natural look, and improves chewing. However, they can become uncomfortable when worn for a long time and are less durable than an implant or bridge.
Removable Complete Denture
A removable complete denture is used to replace most or all teeth. Complete dentures look and function like natural teeth and are less expensive than implants and bridges. Dentures are also less durable and can cause discomfort when worn for long periods of time.
