What can I do if my dentures are uncomfortable?
Dentures are ideal for many situations, and much like permanent teeth, they require constant care. A little bit of discomfort is expected when first adjusting to dentures. If the discomfort continues or begins when it wasn’t an issue, some adjustments should follow.
There could be multiple reasons for denture discomfort, so the solutions vary. Whatever the case is for you, there is a course of action you can take.
Mouth Changes
Your mouth can still experience changes - particularly in the bone. These changes can happen over time when there are no tooth roots present. When this is the case, the dentures will continually irritate. Meet with your dentist to get them adjusted to the proper fit again.
Oral Hygiene
A lack of proper oral hygiene can also cause irritation and mouth sores. Dentures need cleaning nightly, and mouths should be brushed gently twice a day, just like permanent teeth. Brushing the cheeks, gums, and tongue is necessary to prevent irritation.
If you find that your dentures fit, but you are still experiencing discomfort, examine your mouth-cleaning practices to see if anything needs adding.
New Dentures
As mentioned, new dentures can irritate as you become familiar with them. Reach out to a dentist at My Ogden Dentist to know how long you should wait before bringing dentures in to be adjusted. Sometimes, it just takes patience!
In the meantime, consider using over-the-counter pain medication and gargling salt water to soothe irritation. Much like permanent teeth, dentures need continual care and attention!
