What Is Bone Grafting?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure that adds new bone material to areas where bone has been damaged, weakened, or lost. Over time, your body uses the graft as a framework to grow new, healthy bone tissue.

When Is Bone Grafting Used in Dentistry?

Your dentist may recommend a bone graft for several different reasons.

Dental Implants

Bone grafts are frequently utilized in the dental implant process because the implant needs a solid foundation. Bone grafts help to rebuild jawbone density to support the implant.

Tooth Extractions

After a tooth is removed, the jawbone naturally begins to shrink over time. Placing a bone graft into the empty tooth socket helps preserve the bone's shape and volume, making future tooth replacement easier and maintaining your facial structure

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. A bone graft can help restore lost bone, improve tooth stability, and support your long-term oral health.

Oral Trauma

Facial injuries, accidents, or certain congenital defects can result in bone loss in the jaw. Bone grafting helps rebuild these areas, restoring both function and appearance.

What Happens During a Bone Grafting Procedure?

While every case is unique, most bone grafting procedures follow these basic steps:

  1. Your dentist administers local anesthesia or sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

  2. A small incision is made in the gums to access the treatment area.

  3. The area is cleaned, and any damaged tissue is removed if necessary.

  4. The bone graft material is carefully placed where new bone growth is needed.

  5. The gums are closed with sutures to protect the graft while it heals.

Most procedures can be completed in a single appointment. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days after the surgery. Healing takes 3 to 6 months as the bone graft integrates into the jawbone.
