Does my teenager need braces?
The teenage years are an ideal time for braces treatment. Between the ages of 10 and 14, an adolescent’s mouth is still developing, making the teeth more responsive to treatment. Teens often see quicker results, with braces taking about 6 months to 2 years.
While braces can be for cosmetic reasons, they can also solve other issues with the mouth and oral health. Read below to discover what problems may require braces.
Misaligned Bites
There are a variety of misaligned bites, all of which can weaken and wear the teeth improperly. Braces treatment may be needed if your child has:
An overbite: If your child’s top teeth significantly overlap the bottom teeth, covering them completely, your child would benefit from braces.
An overjet: When the top teeth protrude past the bottom teeth, it is called an overjet. An extensive overjet can endanger the top teeth, as they will take the brunt of any impact to the face.
An underbite: Underbites exist when the bottom teeth cover the top teeth when biting down.
A crossbite: If the top and bottom teeth do not meet on both sides when the jaw is closed, your child may have a crossbite.
An open bite: When the bottom and top teeth don’t touch, it can affect chewing and speech. Open bites can be genetic or caused by thumb-sucking or extensive pacifier use.
Other Oral Problems
Braces can also help correct:
Tooth decay and gum disease: Crowded, crooked, or overlapping teeth can cause bacteria to build up and can harm oral health.
Speech difficulties: Misaligned teeth can cause a myriad of speech issues. Straightening the teeth can resolve some speech difficulties.
Crooked or crowded teeth: These problems can affect chewing and biting.
Gapping: Gaps may trap food and bacteria. Closing gaps in teeth will lessen the likelihood of cavities and improve confidence with a more aesthetic smile.
Mouth/jaw pain: Braces can often solve the underlying issues causing the mouth or jaw pain, especially when the pain accompanies eating.
