What if I forget to put in my Invisalign retainer?

What if I forget to put in my Invisalign retainer?

Have you ever forgotten to put in your Invisalign retainer after eating, flossing, drinking, or brushing? Invisalign is a great method for cosmetic dentistry and is a great alternative to metal braces because it uses an almost invisible liner to move and straighten your teeth. However, because the liners are clear, you might have a harder time remembering to put them in again.

Despite this, it is recommended that Invisalign be worn for at least 22 hours per day to be most effective.

Why wearing your retainers is important

Forgetting your Invisalign retainer for an extended amount of time may cause your teeth to shift back to their original position, ultimately costing more time and money. Your teeth move because of the pressure that is placed on them by the liners, and once that pressure is removed, progress may be lost.

Try your best to avoid skipping a day, especially at the beginning of your treatment when teeth are more prone to movement.

Consequences for forgetting your retainers

Your teeth may not fit into your current aligners if you leave them out, even for a few hours.

Forgetting your liners may:

  • Cause teeth to move back to their original positions

  • Prolong your treatment

  • Warrant the need to go back to previous liners

Remembering your retainer

You might consider setting a daily timer on your phone to remember to wear your Invisalign. It is important to schedule an appointment if your retainers no longer fit comfortably or snuggly.
